Site update

I haven’t had much work lately so been working on my webpages. I wrote this before and the socializer plug in popped up and wanted me to do a bunch of stuff to post to Facebook and twitter so I did and it would not close and let me publish so I reloaded it lost everything I wrote. I worked on the Gospel Principles files and fixed the video and talk links. 2026 went though the files again and Church IT has messed up all the links to videos and articles I had linked on the church website again… I removed all the gospel principles files and only kept the comment files because it was too much work to fix them all. Some if you don’t have ?lang=eng on the end of the link it doesn’t work.. they changed /study/ to /study/ensign/ or /study/conference /, /study/liahona/, /media-library/video/ besides changing lds.org to www.churchofjesuschrist.org when they did that in 2019. www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures?lang=eng now used to be http://scriptures.churchofJesusChrist.org or lds.org for a while lds.classic.scriptures/ and can not link to a verse any more. Though if you have marked the scriptures in the Gospel library app and are logged in to the www.churchofjesuschrist.org site it will show your marks when you view the scriptures. I had to remove thousands of scripture links when they did that in 2019 across the salvation pages and gospel principles files. I added menus to the GPC Gospel Principles Commentary files, cleaned up some spacing problems and other stuff left over from removing the scripture links. Styled the Scriptures and mentions to God/Jesus to be different. Was a lot of work as there are 58 pages of them. I had to change every video link and test it see if it was working, some did but had changed slightly so I change the URL before it quit working. Some were giving page not found errors and I had to search for the video to fix the link. .

I added some content to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the Millennium following page an linked the relevant GPC files to the section. I have one recent video of President Dallin H. Oaks speaking in Conference about preparing for the Second coming. I have been looking for more but have not found any. The world is a bit scary right now.

I have been doing a lot of CSS changes, nothing you will notice if you are not a mobile 📱 web browser. I learned how to set up light and dark modes in conjunction to the mobile code. I added flex block to the HTML help files and explained about it. https://scottsworld.info/html_help.htm

The weather pages are mostly working, still some tag issues with Cumulus Tags and it doesn’t do as much as Weather Display did but it kept freezing up and the the author disappeared from the support pages so I switched to Cumulus MX . This is the third weather program I have used and each one is different though Cumulus MX works completely different. Ambient and Weather Display read the data from my Davis station, processed tags in the files and uploaded pages with the data in the files.

Took a while and they don’t really tell you, I assumed it worked like the other two. What Cumulus MX does the files themselves have tags and it uses a java script in the pages to read json data files which it uploads and fill the data displayed from that once it has been uploaded. You don’t have to upload the pages over and over, just the json files and the moon image, which shows phases. There is a java script for that too.

I need to move my website to another server. Ionos my host sucks badly. They screwed up my genealogy program TNG The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding, a dynamic database software. It was showing the code instead of processing the PHP. Support has no idea what they are doing, there solution was to fix it so it showed an error message instead of the code. They only support PHP for WordPress which is all they know, it doesn’t work right for any where else, including TNG, my sitemap Generator ran when I first got there but hasn’t since. I can do PHP images in my weather page but that that doesn’t work either. I had to yell at them because they did a redirect and it was only showing my blog instead of the whole html site. Their AI support chat knows more about it than the support people. But the AI can only chat.

Speaking of AI have used it to fix some things, though it is 50-50 they help or make it worse. Google Gemini was guessing at fixes. ChatGTP has been better. It wanted me to install CODEX but I have not been able to get it to run. Gemini Produced the logo image for my Sewing machine business. I tried ChatGPT but it said it was busy creating other images for people and would get to mine in a couple hours.. It never did. Gemini did it it reasonably fast with several versions which I had it change things until I was satisfied with it.

ChatGTP fixed my Color page I had tried in HTML but it was really huge and would not load. One afternoon I talked to ChatGTP and it wrote a page with a java script that after a few iterations and instructions from me became the 2048 Color picker, you can click on any color you want and it will give you the code in hex and RGB for your CSS. It also changes the background of the page to the color you select, it did that entirely on its own.

I got my Woodward page to work with a little help which put me on the right track, there was one too many 0 in the margins for the container so the browser ignored it. What drove me nuts for years, it only affected this one page, the others all worked. Everything was justified to the left edge of the page and would not move no mater what I tired. Stuff that was centered like the header, centered but stuff like the lists and everything else was stuck on the left side. Adding padding and left margins to the list and everything else I tried didn’t work.

ChatGPT helped me rewrite the Cumulus MX pages, they were ok but had some errors and would not size, they were fixed widths too wide for mobile. I was adding blank Table header lines over my TH to give a space and it told me that was old school HTML brute force… Ok, so I learned HTML in 4.1 and HTML5 is some what different.. Showed me how to add padding to the top of the CSS for the TH so it had space above it. It was pretty obvious once it told me but I had not thought of it.. I knew how to do it the harder way.

HMTL 4 did not have CSS so you had to use the HTML code to do everything. Now your HTML provides the structure for the page and the CSS does everything else. Think of it that HTML is the frame of your house and everything else you see from the walls to the paint color and the floor inside and outside of the house is CSS. From the look, to the positioning of elements, fonts, colors, spacing. For instance my menu on top of the HTML pages is CSS and java code. It does not work or display right with out the CSS and javascript. AI has helped me fix some things with the menu that, for instance, long menus would need to scroll and it would scroll the page behind the menu instead of the menu. It takes code for the menu to stay where it is and not scroll with the page.

I added a NOAA radio element to the Weather page and for some unknown reason it screwed up the whole page lay out. It should not have, but it wanted to be way too wide and I could not get it to shrink. ChatGPT helped me with that and set the page as flex box, it took a week or more to get that to work right. With out the flex box code the page is one long column. It drops to one column for mobile display. Actually I started with Gemini AI and it made matters worse because it was guessing at fixes, I wasted several evenings trying that.. I switched to ChatGPT and it helped me fix it. In 2026 AI is still pretty new and still in its childhood, it is not a mature product yet.

Covad 19

I was furloughed March 23 the day before my 56 birthday for 60 days because SVP Sewing Brands claimed they did not have enough sales to pay me and the driver but kept on the head jerk who ‘s pay would have covered mine and the drivers pay. This even though I have been there 20+ years and longer than any of the others combined,

I don’t miss work at all, I do miss being paid and that is as far as it goes. If I could make a better living doing something else I will. We have not had a cost of living raise since Viking White became SVP . I am paid far below the nominal pay of someone my age. Last year they cut all or overtime, in the last two years I have gone from $43,000 to $36,000. 10-15 years ago it was good money but everything has gone up because the government is inflating the dollar to finance their over spending. Now I barely get by on what I make.

We have mostly been staying home other than to go out for food when we can not have it delivered. Both of us are at risk, she is 5 years older than I. I have allergies which cause issues with my breathing and lungs. I had pneumonia when I was 5 and if I work out and stress my lungs I cough. My allergies make me cough and sneeze, if it grows I am probably allergic to it. I know I’m really allergic to Palo verde pollen which are every where in Phoenix. If I get a cold or flue a cough can hold on for months so getting Covad would be a very bad thing for me.

I have been updating my web skills taking classes from www.udemy.com I earned my HTML5 certification taking a Web Authoring class and started another that would certify me in HTML, CSS and Java Script. I am not near as happy with it. The class is so out of date that the HTML lessons are using font tags! Font has been discontinued since HTML 4.3. CSS styles have replaced font since then and now with HTML5 has taken over the positioning and placement of elements. Responsive web design for sites to display in mobile devices is all about CSS

I put up a page Scott’s Sewing Machine Repair, posted about it on Neighborhood link, facebook and even spent $50 on running Facebook add in the local area. for that I got two people who said they would bring repairs but never showed up. I have had one person bring me a repair from Neighborhood Link from the local area. She rang the door bell and then talked to me from the side walk in front of the house 20 feet away. Even cleaned the machine and case with alcohol wipes before bringing it to me. I appreciate that even though I think it is way over kill. There is no evidence that anyone has got covad 19 from touching a surface.

I can not make a living on 2 repairs a month.. I had another who brought me an old machine referred by a store to me which has been since closed. Or run more adds that were seen by over 10,000 people and only two contacted me and then did not follow through.

I applied for unemployment but in Arizona they only pay $240 a week. We buy food with my significant other’s disability. We can not get married because she would then loose her insurance and then we would be starving to death as my income barely was paying the mortgage which was nearly all of one check, Then my other biweekly check went to paying electricity, water, gas, my cell phone, internet and keeping my truck running. I contacted the mortgage company (Rocket mortage/Quicken Loans) and they have deferred my payments until July. But I have heard I might have to catch up the back payments when I start again which there is no way I can do that. If I am barely paying each month and have no income how am I to catch up in July? I will have to check on that to see if it is true we have to make up back payments.

Menu changes

I have been fiddling with side menu for over a year, was having issues with when it was open it did not scroll with the page and on long pages could not be seen. I recently changed the main page on Cactus Wren to a responsive set up and the side menu in the test page broke the whole set up when opened so it was time to find something else. Cactus Wren with the new menu now will display normally as two columns of content and on mobile devices the right column drops under the left and shows as one long page.

The top menu was deployed there first and now has come to all of the website except the genealogy pages and Woodward pages. For some reason the Woodward pages do not obey the container settings and the menu is all messed up. Still have not figured out the weirdness for that. I suspect maybe something to do with the image back ground which is unique to those pages. The The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding v. 12.2, Scotts ancestors and Captain Henry Woordward’s descendants are a PHP set up like WordPress so they are a different challenges to change.

I have changed my WordPress theam to 2020 which allowed me to have a blue menu header with links. Still investigating on how to do drop down buttons on it like the rest of my site. I found the drop down buttons on WC3schools. I looked at several and there was only one that allowed me to have multiple drop down buttons with different menus some would show the first menu on child buttons and basically just plain text. I had to experiment with their menus until I found this set up.

If you have seen a lot of menu code they often involve styling list items. This has no list for the menu links and no class to style the url links either. I did have the buttons open the main URL but when using it mobile with no mouse it made it difficult to access the drop down menu so I removed the links in the buttons and now they just activate the drop down menu. It is a combination of HTML, CSS and java script to make it work. At first it was not working on the duckduckgo android browser, the buttons did not appear and the links showed on the blue background. I did not change anything and it now is working.. Works on all the browser combinations I have tried.

WordPress has been updated to the latest version. I also made a change of the fonts on the website. I have wordpress showing serif but not the Faustina variable font I picked from Google fonts yet, another change I need to research. I did that after a recent class Udemy html5 class assignment to pick 4 favorite fonts and show them in the assignment.

https://scottsworld.info Biggest change is implementing https on the site, the default URL for the blog was changed to https and had to change all the links in my pages from http to https. Now getting any links to my site to change because if you to the http link instead of https it will stay on http until you click on a new link with the https coding.

Have mostly completed updating the HTML/CSS of the site to be HTML 5 compliant. Unless you know website coding it probably isn’t of must interest.  A lot of things I was instructed to do in html 4 now is depreciated or not supported and I had to remove it. The main changes are designed to make sites more flexible so they display on any display or device.  If you don’t know HTML is Hyper Text Markup Language and CSS is Cascading Style Sheet.  More and more of the  control of the site from the color and fonts to margins, alignment of elements and so on are in the style sheet.

Biggest annoyance is over the years they have gone from the “center” tag to using “align=center” in that ever tag we wanted to center and you could center a whole page and everything on it with div align=center.  Well all that is depreciated and they want you to align stuff with the style sheet and one alignment command is now replaced with half a dozen different ones and what works on text does not work on images or tables and so on. I had to learn a whole new  technique to align images and tables. Now have one style command with half a dozen align and margin commands to do what align=center did with style=center with isn’t as reliable, some times doesn’t work.

Was working on the Woodward pages Friday night and yesterday, have one page that will not obey the style sheet and all the text runs from one side and off the right side… Driving me nuts, can’t find a reason why and html tidy and the css checker say there are no errors but obviously there is a problem.  https://woodward.scottsworld.info/introduction.htm  All the subpages from that page work using he same code..  ARGGG! Computers!!!  Enough to drive a person insane some times..

The weather page is mostly working. https://weather.scottsworld.info/index.html   At least the main page is, having issues with the program Weather display not uploading files it is set to and creating and uploading one image I have turned off completely but it still does it..  Bloomsky v1 died and was replaced with Bloomsky v2 but I have had issues with my internet dropping and have to get up on the roof and reset the bloomsky to the router.  If it is not one thing it is another around here, murphys law is working over time..  I will have to post some photos later, my phone crashed said the sd card was corrupted and the last photos I took the other day aren’t on it any more..

Removed the Gospel Principles pages, the list hasn’t been used in a few years now. Had too many people complaining they wanted to be removed (although instructions on how to unsubscribe were at the bottom of every message)  and not one person (over 500 subscribers) complained when I stopped posting as I don’t have enough time.  So I decided to remove the pages.  

Think that is everything, lot of coding changes and other technical changes but it still looks mostly the same. You would probably have to be me to spot the changes really.
